Bridges - Engineering WebQuest

Use the links provided to help answer the questions and learn about bridges.  You will be designing a building a truss bridge as an engineering design challenge, so learn as much as possible.

You are going to research the following bridge types:  Arch Bridge, Beam Bridge, Suspension Bridge, Truss Bridge

Build a Bridge - Use this site to help explain the strengths and weaknesses of some of the bridge types.  Pay attention to the forces which act upon the bridges.

Watch the following two videos to get more information about the bridge types and the forces which act upon them.
Bridge Basics - Use this site to gather even more information about bridges, including truss bridges.  This site is especially good at showing the forces that work on the bridges as well as some strengths and weaknesses of the bridges.

How Bridges Work - There are multiple pages on this site that you will need to check out.  Remember, you want to learn a lot about truss bridges.  There could be a number of things which are a weakness for truss bridges.  Check here.

Why They Failed - Read about some bridge failures and find out what happened.  This could help you in your design.  It's also very interesting.

Design Squad: Truss Bridge - Watch how one group of students designed and built a truss bridge

Here are a few games about bridges. You need "flash" to play them.

Build the Bridge - A Cool Math game
Structural Engineering - A Wonderville game of building
New Bay Bridge - Build a bridge that can withstand earthquakes

Watch the video below for a great way bridges are being used to help protect our environments and the creatures of the earth.
